As children across Sydney and Australia return to school, many mothers find themselves adjusting to a new daily rhythm. In this blog, we look at mindset shifts and tips that help make it as easy as possible for mothers: the pillars of our community!

The back to school transition can be both a relief and a challenge, as routines shift and responsibilities change.

Whether you have younger children starting school for the first time or older children returning to their studies, it is important to approach this period with intention, mindfulness, and self-care. Here are some practical and spiritual ways to ease into this transition.

Be Intentional

The start of a school day sets the tone for both you and your children. Beginning each day with clear intentions is crucial.

Communicate with your children about what they hope to achieve and encourage them to set small goals for their school day. This practice helps instill mindfulness, responsibility, and a sense of purpose in their learning journey.

Setting intentions together can be a meaningful bonding experience that reminds children that their day holds opportunities for growth and reward.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) taught us the importance of having sincere intentions. He said: “Actions are but by intentions, and every man shall have only that which he intended.” (Agreed upon).

Encouraging children to have good intentions for their studies — whether it be seeking beneficial knowledge, excelling in their efforts, or helping others — reinforces the Islamic principle that every effort made for a righteous purpose is rewarded.

To reinforce these lessons, consider implementing a morning routine where each family member states one intention for the day. This can help instill a habit of purpose-driven actions that extend beyond school and into all aspects of life.

Make Dua

As mothers, one of our most powerful tools is dua. The Quran reminds us of the importance of seeking Allah’s guidance and protection:

“And your Lord says, ‘Call upon Me; I will respond to you.'” (Qur’an 40:60)

Teaching children the supplications for leaving home, riding a vehicle, and seeking knowledge can provide them with a sense of spiritual security and consciousness of Allah.

Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) taught:

“When a man goes out of his house and says: ‘In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah,’ it will be said to him: ‘You have been guided, sufficed, and protected,’ and the devils will go far away from him.” (Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi)

Mothers should also make dua for their children’s success, safety, and well-being throughout the school day. A heartfelt dua such as:

“O Allah, I entrust my children to You, for You are the best of Protectors. Guide them towards righteousness and keep them steadfast in their faith.”

Getting in the habit of actively making dua and talking to Allah instills reliance on Allah and brings comfort to both mother and child.

Additionally, creating a routine of reciting short surahs such as Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas before children leave for school provides spiritual protection and reminds them to seek Allah’s help in all matters.

Personal Development for Mums!

With children back at school, mothers have an opportunity to refocus on their personal growth. This time can be used for physical, mental, and spiritual self-care.

Here are some crucial things that we feel all mothers need to be investing their time in.

Spiritual Nourishment

Dedicate time to reading the Quran, making Dhikr, or attending Islamic classes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“The best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)

Even if it is just a few verses a day, engaging with the Quran brings immense barakah (blessings) into daily life.

Physical Well-being

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also emphasised taking care of one’s body:

“Your body has a right over you.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)

Simple acts such as exercise, healthy eating, and getting adequate rest can enhance overall well-being.

Continuous Learning

Mothers can also use this time to enhance their skills, whether it be in Islamic studies, personal hobbies, or professional development. Gaining knowledge is an act of worship when done with a sincere intention.

By dedicating time to personal growth, mothers can cultivate inner peace and resilience, which ultimately benefits their entire household.

Establish Healthy Habits at Home

The transition back home after school can be just as important as the morning routine. Expect that children may need time to decompress after a long day of learning.

Changes in behavior, fatigue, and mood swings are natural, and it is important to approach them with patience.

  • Allow them space to rest: Give children a moment to unwind before discussing homework or responsibilities.
  • Engage in meaningful conversation: Ask them about their experiences, what they learned, and how they felt during the day. This helps build emotional intelligence and family bonds.
  • Create a grounding home environment: Encouraging regular family prayers strengthens the family’s spiritual connection. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“Prayer is the pillar of religion; whoever establishes it, establishes religion; and whoever destroys it, destroys religion.” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi)

Praying together, even if just Maghrib or Isha as a family, can foster unity and provide an anchor of peace.

Further, reinforcing good sleep habits and providing nutritious meals can help children maintain their energy levels and focus better in school.

Ensuring that children have dedicated quiet time for homework and reading can also enhance their productivity.

Embrace the challenge

The back-to-school season is not just a shift for children, but for the whole family.. By setting intentions, making dua, focusing on self-growth, and maintaining a nurturing home environment, the transition can be smooth and fulfilling.

Embrace this change as an opportunity to develop deeper connections within your family and to grow as an individual.

May Allah (SWT) grant ease, protection, and success to all mothers and their children in this new school year, and may He bless every mother with the strength, patience, and wisdom to guide her children toward righteousness. Ameen!
