As a Muslim women’s organisation that has been at the forefront of advocacy, representation, and support for over 40 years in Australia, we at Muslim Women Australia are deeply disturbed by the recent tragic events that have occurred in Bondi and Fairfield.

We acknowledge the heightened sense of fear and unease that many in our community, particularly Muslim women who are visibly identifiable by the hijab, are experiencing. No one should feel unsafe or threatened simply because of their faith or appearance. We extend our hands in compassion and support to all those affected by these events.

We express our heartfelt sympathy and solidarity with the victims and their families. In times of tragedy, it is essential for us to come together as a community and support one another.

We are disappointed by the inconsistency in labelling these incidents, where one is swiftly termed a terrorist incident while another, which was extremely terrifying and resulted in loss of life, was not given the same designation. This inconsistency perpetuates fear and bias and undermines our collective efforts towards a more inclusive society.

The selective application of labels based on the identity or background of the perpetrators sends a dangerous message and perpetuates harmful stereotypes. It creates an environment of uncertainty and distrust, where individuals from marginalised communities, including Muslim women, may feel unfairly targeted or stigmatised.

Such inconsistencies in labelling, investigating, verifying and reporting overlook the broader context of violence, which can come from various sources and ideologies. It is crucial to address all forms of violence with equal seriousness and not selectively apply labels that contribute to division and prejudice.

As an organisation dedicated to promoting unity, understanding, and justice, we urge for a more consistent and nuanced approach in investigating and labelling such incidents. This includes taking into account the complexities of motivations behind acts of violence and ensuring that our responses are guided by principles of due process and justice, so in times of crises we uphold fairness, inclusivity, and respect for all members of society.

As we are aware of the heightened tensions in the community, we urge everyone to remain vigilant of their surroundings. It is crucial to report any suspicious activities, threats, or instances of intimidation to the authorities promptly. Together, we can work towards a safer and more harmonious community for all.

In this challenging time, let us stand united against hate, bigotry, and violence. We call for calm, understanding, and solidarity within our diverse communities.

With justice, peace and solidarity,

Muslim Women Australia
