“When the trials and tribulations fall, hold fast onto the Sunnah, observe silence and don’t get involved in that which does not concern you.”

Imam Adh-Dhahabi [Siyar A’lam Al-Nubala, 20/141]

Step 1: Stick to the sunnah.

There is comfort and ease that comes from holding onto the sunnah acts. Whatever you know of the sunnah, do it whenever you can, and Allah SWT will give you a sense of contentment like no other.

You will be so concerned with holding onto the sunnah you won’t have the mental space to concern yourself with other trivial matters.

Step 2: Observe silence.

There is a saying – if speech is silver but silence is golden. Sometimes being silent can be more valuable than the most eloquent of words, and have more of a positive impact on your own heart and soul than speaking words will have.

Step 3: Don’t get involved in that which does not concern you.

This one is obvious. As much as we might get roped into becoming involved in other people’s matters, it’s better for you to stay away. Don’t involve yourself in matters that are not your concern and you heart will find rest. It will feel at peace because you won’t be carrying unnecessary burdens.

Each step leads to the next, and it starts with holding onto the sunnah. Connecting with the Beloved, our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) Whether it’s a smile at stranger, sitting while eating and drinking, checking in on a friend, spreading salam or even making a certain dua, these are the first steps to get you through tribulations. To soothe your aching heart and bring back a sense of peace and contentment.

Allahumma salli wa sallim wa baarik ‘alayhi wa ‘Ala aalih.

Peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family.

May Allah SWT grant us the strength, patience and determination we need to perform our actions with sincerity and have our deeds accepted.
