On Saturday 19th Of October, the MWA Team, Staff and Board, came together for a different kind of meeting. It was the 41st AGM (Annual General Meeting), and after having cancelled our 40th anniversary celebrations last October, this event demonstrated the commitment, dedication and renewed purpose of all involved at MWA, in surroundings that soothed the soul and provided much needed connection, outdoors in the presence of birds, trees and a flowing river.
“We certainly are not bound by the walls of a boardroom nor are we bound by what’s imposed on us with no explanation as to its benefit and purpose. And what cooling comfortable healing moment it was to be sitting by the river, gracefully enjoying the freedom of nature without compromising our principles”, remarked Hajeh Maha Krayem Abdo, CEO of MWA.
Reflecting on the last year, MWA’s position now as a 40 year old organisation in the community, and the role we all have to play, reinforced the true meaning of belonging and purpose.
As we reflected on the past year, we are compelled to confront a horrendous year that continues to evoke profound sorrow and outrage. The occupation and violence against the Palestinian people, particularly against women and children, highlight the urgent need for global advocacy and support. We stand in solidarity with our Palestinian sisters, recognising their struggles as a reflection of our own commitment to justice and dignity.
“The pain of the last year has been palpable. Many in our community have felt the impacts of these events deeply, grappling with the emotional toll of injustice and loss. Yet, despite these challenges, MWA has remained steadfast in our mission to uplift and support Muslim women across Australia”, remarked Lilianna Ghamraoui, President of MWA.
Our vision to empower Muslim women and advocate for their rights, remains our guiding light. We have launched initiatives aimed at mental health support, community engagement, and educational workshops, all designed to foster resilience and strength within our community and beyond.
As we look forward, we are reminded that our mission is clearer than ever: to advocate for justice, support our community, and ensure that every woman, man and child feels respected, safe and valued.
Our resilience individually and community wide continue to inshallah inspire us to stay firm, keep raising our voices and pushing for change, fostering understanding, and building bridges within the broader society, for justice and peace.
The morning concluded with a guided rock painting activity and rock drop with Palestine Rocks accompanied by a nature walk with purpose. Resistance has many forms, and we stand together with the people of Palestine, Lebanon and all those resisting against their oppressors.
Together, we are better, and together we will inshallah continue to work for the now while mindful of a future where justice prevails and every woman, man and child can thrive in a world where freedom is not just a word but an action where authenticity is celebrated and respected.
