Muslim Women Australia invites you to complete this voluntary survey (and optional interview) about your views on forced marriage. Under Australian Law, forced marriage is a crime and is considered a slavery-like practice. In some jurisdictions, Forced marriage is also recognised as a form of family and domestic violence.
Forced marriage is not the same as arranged marriage.
Forced marriage occurs when a person is forced to marry without freely or fully consenting because they have been coerced, threatened or deceived or because they are incapable of understanding the nature and effect of a marriage ceremony. Forced marriage also occurs where a person is under the age of 16 when they marry.
Your responses to this survey (and optional interview) will inform Muslim Women Australia’s understanding of community views about forced marriage and their response to legislative reform in this area.
